Ensuring that Your Diamond is Firmly Affixed to Its Mounting

By Margot Liu

The best point in time of a woman's life comes when the man she adores presents her with one of those unique engagement rings. The engagement ring is a tangible proof that her special man wants to live with her for life. It's a testament that he loves her a great deal. And for the woman, accepting the ring claims her agreement to the guy's desire to love and cherish her eternally.

As you can see, a diamond engagement rings ring is a very special item. And just like nurturing a relationship, it is essential to take good care of the jewellery item. Even without its sentimental value, a diamond engagement ring is quite an expensive investment that required a whole lot of time, money, and effort.

Therefore losing the heart of the ring, the diamond, is a no-no; but it still happens. In most cases, the individual wearing the diamond ring does not notice it until much later. Rings that are inlaid with several small gemstones are the typical "victims" of such loss. But other kinds of mounts can fail. A diamond that are affixed in a pave setting can be knocked off by a violent and sudden bump. Invisible-set diamonds can be pried off from improperly secured settings. The precious gems can even come loose from supposedly secure channel settings if there's a problem with the mounting.

There are several factors that contribute to such a loss. For example, the gem may be knocked off when the ring is hit on a hard object. It may get inadvertently pried off when the mount is damaged. Or the glue that held the diamond in position might have weakened.

If you have a precious engagement ring, you would absolutely want the diamond to be securely fastened to the mounting. Check out these practical tips so that your diamond does not wander off.

1. Give the diamond on your ring a very gentle push. A slight move signifies that you need to have the mounting fixed by an experienced jeweller.

2. See if the mounting is secure and in good condition. Worn out, broken, or bent mountings are sure solutions for a lost diamond. Ensure that the mount is secure and tight. Have it repaired if you notice any damage. Note that mounts made of soft metal such as silver or gold can be damaged very easily.

3. Don't slip on your diamond ring if you're doing physical activities such as washing your car, carrying heavy things, or playing in a sport activity. Violent and abrupt movements or hits can dislodge the stone.

4. Do not wear the diamond ring if you are about to handle chemicals, household products, and detergents. Not only will these substances tarnish the metal setting but they may also weaken the glue that fixes the diamond to the mounting. In a similar manner, do not wear your ring if you're swimming in the pool or out in the sea. Chlorine and salt water, respectively, can definitely damage the setting and weaken the adhesion.

5. Often clean the ring since the accumulation of dirt can weaken the adhesive. If you are going to use ultrasonic cleaners, you should check the gemstone after the jewellery is cleaned. Small but powerful ultrasonic vibrations can loosen the rock.
