The history of 1st wedding anniversary gifts goes back a long way. Traditions vary from country to country. We will explore these traditions and come all the way up to the twentieth century. This type of gift sends the message that a couple it still together.

Another such tradition involves the garter. The whole concept of the garter came about because of an ancient practice. At the end of the ceremony, those in attendance would rush the bride and take a piece of her dress for good luck.

The anniversary gift for the first year of marriage is paper. Just like marriage, paper is flexible, and it can be molded. Paper has those same qualities. There are some unique ideas that have been developed around paper.

Another gift for this particular anniversary is cotton. Many Europeans give cotton. It symbolizes the dowry being completed paid. A more modern adaptation is to give a clock. The concept behind giving a clock is that it represents the time that the couple will spend together.

Even though it is, just the first year of marriage the gift can still be exciting. There are number of places that can offer a wide selection of choices. Have a book of poems that reflect the personalities of the couple written. Publish it as a book, so that the they can read it for years to come.

If the husband or wife is a writer, perhaps they can send a card promising to write one love letter per month and have it framed to present to the other mate. If they are going with the clock theme, there are some very creative ways to present this gift.

In the case of the clock think about the person and buy them the appropriate timepiece. Perhaps, it is a classic pocket watch, or a beautiful Waterford crystal mantle watch.
